Health Sciences Education

Georgetown University Medical Center educates physicians, scientists, nurses and health care professionals committed to the care of others and the health needs of society — always integrating educational excellence, ethics and a commitment to community.  MedStar Health supports a continuum of education, training residents and fellows, and provides educational and training opportunities for nursing and health students.

Since 1851, Georgetown University School of Medicine has been instructing the world’s future doctors with a commitment to education intrinsic to our values and Jesuit tradition.

Together, MedStar Health and Georgetown University provide a continuum of learning from medical school through clinical practice and elevate our programs to benefit medical students, residents, fellows, clinical faculty, and our patients. We train 1,100 medical residents annually and offer advanced education in nearly 100 specialty and subspecialty programs. Our post-graduate medical education programs prepare physicians to transform health and wellness delivery through compassionate patient care, groundbreaking scientific research, and solution-based medical innovations.

The School of Nursing at Georgetown University builds on a 120-year tradition of excellence in nursing education at the professional, advanced practice, and doctoral levels. Our on-campus and distance-based, online nursing programs emphasize research and scholarship, are grounded in a social justice framework, and are committed to equity, diversity and inclusion. Our commitment to nursing is infused with the Jesuit values of caring for the whole person — cura personalis — and serving the common good.

To determine ongoing strategic opportunities and initiatives for nursing education and research, MedStar Health and Georgetown University’s School of Nursing launched the Joint Council for Nursing in 2023.

The Georgetown University School of Health reflects the ongoing, urgent need to focus our collective efforts on applied health research and on creating a more equitable, evidence-driven and values-based health care system that can withstand the enormous challenges facing the United States.
